  • #privacy #payments | Apple Pay is great, but I think there is some misunderstanding out there about the details of how it works.

    Interesting comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39847221

Something that's missing from all of these discussions is that transactions on Apple Pay (and all similar wallets like Google Pay, Samsung Pay etc.) are now just as trackable as those done using the underlying card number.
While the DPAN is unique to a given device, the merchant's payment service provider these days can receive a unique identifier called PAR in the authorization response from the card network. That identifier is consistent across all DPANs for the same card (and aspirationally even across card number changes on the same underlying account).

  • #indieweb | You know all those “share to Facebook” / “share to Twitter” links you see all over peoples’ websites? They’re all out of date. Social media has evolved over the last year, yet nobody has “share to” links for Mastodon, Bluesky, Threads, etc. There have been a few attempts to create “share to Mastodon” buttons, but they haven’t taken the larger breadth of the new social media landscape into account. So I’ve built a prototype, which I’ve called ShareOpenly. At the bottom of every article on my site, you’ll see a “share to social media” button

  • #sqlite | Lots of database management tools include some kind of schema diagram view, either automatically generated or manually editable so you can get the layout just right. But it's usually part of a much bigger suite of tools, and sometimes I don't want to install a tool, I just want to get a basic overview quickly.

  • #writing | I woke up this morning, sleep deprived after my cat woke me up repeatedly last night and discovered I needed to write something about writing. Perhaps it's because I'm reading "Bird by bird" again by Anne Lamott. So here is another post about writing as a software engineer. I love writing, I love the feel of knowing there's a seed of a story or an idea inside. With some writing projects I know something is there worth telling, but I don't always know enough about it yet to be sure. Sometimes it requires upfront research and sometimes I think I know enough to start writing and see the idea emerge as I type. The piece advances, in fits and starts, as I go back and research gaps, and often discarding the whole thing and rewriting it again... until it has formed itself into something worth while. Then I send it to people for review and I get more ideas and insights making the piece better again.

  • #indieweb #miniflux | Tinkering with my website and getting inspired at Indie Web Camp Brighton.

While we were hacking away on day two, somebody mentioned that they still find hard to explain the indie web to people.

“It’s having your own website”, I said.

But surely there’s more to it than that, they wondered.

Nope. If someone has their own website, then they’re part of the indie web. It doesn’t matter if that website is made with a complicated home-rolled tech stack or if it’s a Squarespace site.

  • #rss | Why OPML us iseful

With OPML, you don’t need separate applications or services to categorize feeds. Categorization can be achieved within a single OPML file through its outlining capabilities or by managing multiple OPML files, each dedicated to a different category or use-case. It is a very viable workflow to have one OPML file for your YouTube subscriptions, another for your favorite Twitter/X and Mastodon users, one more for news sites, and yet another for personal blogs — the world’s your oyster. However, there aren’t many application that support nested OPML outlines or categorizing based on different files, sadly, but there should be! This is a call to action, developers: Perfect side-project!

Beyond personal convenience, OPML has the potential to better the ecosystem of the small web. By not only sharing an RSS feed on your personal website, but also your list of subscribed feeds, we’re effectively creating a recommendation system that is based on concious curation, not statistical metrics.
